父の家 / Northern Lights

サイアノタイプ写真などの手法で岩手の過疎地にある父の実家を1998年から撮影している『父の家 My Father’s House』、 2018年フィンランドに滞在し、ラップランド地方に暮らした人々の痕跡を追い求め、さらに60年代ダム建設で無人となったムテニア村をピンホールカメラで撮影した『Northern Lights』。日本とフィンランド、国が違ってもそこに息づく北の文化や近代化の影響で変わりゆく暮らしのありようを、独特の視線で捉えた写真とエッセイで綴った展覧会です。

この展覧会では、千葉が取り組んでいる二つの写真作品のシリーズが展示されました。
会場の初めに展示された作品は、岩手県花巻市東和町にある父の古い家を1998年から現在まで撮影を続けている「父の家 My Father’s House」と題された青い写真作品です。
次に展示された作品は、フィンランド北部のラップランド地方をピンホールカメラで撮影した「Northern Lights」という新作です。千葉は、2018年にフィンランドに滞在し、自然を敬い、暮らしの文化を未来にどう継承していくかを実践している人々と出会い、感銘を受けました。
また、ラップランド地方の地域社会の文化とアイデンティティを調査・研究し、北部の地域を訪れて撮影をしました。ソダンキュラにある普段入ることのできないムテニア村を訪れたとき、千葉はダム湖の建設によって大きく変わってしまった村の様子を見ました。そして、そこに住んでいた人々と自然との深いつながりを示す物語を知り、かつて存在した豊かな民話や自然の姿を目に浮かべながら、ピンホールカメラを使って、現在の風景に過去の時間を重ね合わせるような写真を撮りました。
この二つの写真作品のシリーズは、撮影された地域が違っても共鳴し合い、二つのエッセイとともに、東北地方とフィンランド北部の人々の暮らしとその背景を表わしています。

 

Chiba has been working on the series My Father’s House since 1998, using the cyanotype photographic printing process and other techniques to document her father’s family home in a depopulated area of Iwate. In 2018, she stayed in Finland, where she worked on her Northern Lights series using a pinhole camera to pursue the traces of the people who lived in the Lapland region and photograph the village of Mutenia, which had been left uninhabited due to the construction of a dam in the 1960s. Through photographs and essays captured from Chiba’s unique perspective, this exhibition revealed the northern cultures that exist in Japan and Finland and how their lives are changing in the face of modernization—a story they share despite being two different countries.

This exhibition featured two of Chiba’s photography series.
Displayed in the first half of the exhibition was a series of blue photographs titled My Father’s House, which Chiba has continued to shoot since 1988 at her father’s old home in Towa-cho, Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture.
The second half exhibited a new series titled Northern Lights, taken in the Lapland region of northern Finland using a pinhole camera. During a 2018 stay in the area, Chiba was impressed by how the people she met there respected nature and actively looked to pass on their culture’s way of life to future generations.
She also conducted research on the culture and identity of local communities in the Lapland region, visiting and photographing areas in the north. During a visit to Mutenia in Sodankylä, which is usually closed to the public, Chiba saw how the construction of a reservoir had drastically changed the village. Hearing stories that revealed the deep connection between the people who lived there and nature, she imagined both the rich folktales and the natural forms that once existed and used a pinhole camera to capture images that appear to superimpose the past onto the present landscape.
These two photographic series resonate with each other despite being taken in different countries, and together with the two essays, they reveal the day-to-day lives and the setting of those living in both northern Finland and the Tohoku region of Japan.
