2016年に私は青森県に滞在して、かつて主に漁師が何代にもわたって仕事着として着ていたサグリという衣服や、南部の裂織を取材しました。これらは200年以上前から続いてきた手仕事です。汚れた木綿の端切れを苦労して集め、大変な手間をかけて一つの布や衣服として蘇らせているものです。現在このようなサグリを作る方も着る方もなく、漁業や農業に携わる地域も変化していますが、裂織は続いています。

作品『時の層 Layers of Time』は、時代の中で失っていくものと続いていくもの、現在の風景と過去の暮らしの中で使われてきたものを、手作りのピンホールカメラで多重露光撮影を試みた作品です。

ほつれて穴があき、泥やシミのあるサグリは、着ていた人々の仕事を想像させます。ひと目ひと目女性たちの手により織り込まれた布の奥に、かつてここに住んでいた方々の心や、変わる風景と変わらない風景が見えてくる気持ちがします。

I stayed in Aomori in 2016 to study the clothing called Sagri which were made in fisherman villages and the handicraft called Sakiori, which have been made for over 200 years. To withstand the cold, the inhabitants gathered and re-woven ragged cloths, made warm clothes, and wore them for generations. Nowadays, no one makes and wears those clothing Saguri and Sakiori due to lifestyle changes in farmlands and fisherman villages, but these handiworks are still going on by people who get the joy of making.

In this work entitled ‘Layers of Time’, I try to depict the vestiges of bygone eras by multiple exposure of the old handicrafts that are no longer taken over in Aomori and the current landscapes where they were once made, using my handmade pinhole camera.

Seeing those clothes that are dirty or perforated makes me imagine the lives of the people who wore them. Looking deeply into the fine texture of the cloth, I feel the hearts and spirits of the people who lived here.
