2018年、私は縁があってフィンランド北部地方に2か月間滞在し、ラップランド地方を訪ね歩いて、この地域の文化やアイデンティティを研究しました。地域に残る伝統的な暮らしや、サミの方々が深い関わりをもって暮らしてきた大切な土地を見せていただいて、滞在しながら写真を撮りました。また、東ラップランドへは何度か出かけて、ヨーロッパ最大のダム湖建設によって立ち入ることができなくなったソンピオ地域の小さな村の1つ、ムテニア村も撮影しました。

私にとって最も強く印象に残った経験は、フィンランドのラップランド地方にあるそのムテニア村を撮影したことです。人工湖に沈んだ村の一つ、ムテニア村は、湖の水位より高い土地の一部が今も湖の淵に残っていて、当時の生活を知ることができるように保護区になっています。目の前に広がる風景の元の姿を想像しながらこの場所を眺めていると、昔ここに住んでいらした方々と自然の深いつながりや、様々な時代を経てきたことが、思い起こされるようでした。写真を撮りながら、過去の時間を想像していました。作品「Northern Lights」は、かつてここに存在していた豊かな民間伝承や自然の景観の面影を、現在の風景とともにとらえようとして撮った作品です。

また、フィンランド北部地方での滞在中、私が最も感銘を受けたことは、自然環境や地域の伝統を尊重して生きる方々に出会ったことでした。私はみなさんから、この場所で生きていくために必要ないくつかの知識、自然をいたわる知恵と、伝統的な暮らしをどう将来に伝えていくかを学びました。それは私にはとても貴重な経験でした。なぜなら、東北地方の山麓で私の祖先が代々農業をしてきた「父の家」の暮らしと、フィンランド北部地方の方々の生き方や環境は、重なる部分が多いことを知ったからです。
上記にある「Essay on ‘Northern Lights’」に、その時の経験を書きました。

During my 2-month stay in Finland in 2018, I had studied the culture and identity of regional communities of the northern part of the country, and photographed the traditional culture of the area and the deep lands where the Sami people live. Also, I had several field trips to Eastern Lapland where I took photographs of the village of Mutenia that was one of the small villages in Sompio before the artificial lake was constructed.　I was really impressed with these places.

There are two things that impressed me most. One thing is when I visited Mutenia Village which is preserved in its original state when the village sank in the bottom of artificial lake. When I visited the place, the story of the deep connection between the inhabitants and the natural landscape in the past, crossed in my mind. While taking pictures, I tried to imagine the view of the place in the past. It came to my mind that the rich folklore and the nature that existed there before be reconnected with the present landscape.

The other thing that impressed me was meeting the people who live in respect for nature and their traditions in the northern part of Finland. I learned how to be in harmony with nature by protecting and preserving its traditional culture for the sake of the future generation to come.

From this experience, I gained some positive insights of depopulated areas like my father’s old house located in a very traditional farming area. I will continue to study the traditions and cultures of the Tohoku region and northern part of Finland through my lens.
